Wedding turns into nightmare
03/03/2004 16:49  - (SA)

Beijing - Seventy-six people in southwest China's Yunnan province have been treated for food poisoning after attending a wedding party, state media said on Wednesday.

The wedding party was held at a restaurant in Luxi county on Monday, and in the subsequent 48 hours, a growing number have sought medical help for nausea, vomiting, fatigue, headaches and diarrhoea, Xinhua news agency reported.

The county hospital has set up a special team to treat the victims, who are all out of danger, and the county health bureau has taken food samples and started investigations into the cause of the poisoning, Xinhua said.

The agency did not report if local officials suspected a crime might be behind the outbreak.

Cases of food poisoning have become increasingly frequent in China due to poor food hygiene and a string of deliberate poisoning cases involving rat poison and pesticides.
