Egypt says more terror coming
11/04/2004 17:39 - (SA)
Cairo - Egypt's interior minister predicted an increase in "fierce" terror attacks around the world as a result of current violence that will breed new terrorists, according to comments published on Saturday by the country's official news agency.
"The world will witness new and escalating terrorist operations in the coming period, as what are we witnessing on the international and regional arenas will produce new terrorist cells that will wage more fierce attacks," Habib El-Adly was quoted as saying by the Middle East News Agency in an inaugural speech at a new security forces camp.
He did not elaborate or specify potential targets or countries.
"Al-Qaeda still exists and is mobile, and its contact channels are open," he said, adding that the terror network include members from different political orientations and nationalities.
El-Adly said he believes al-Qaeda has changed "its pure Islamic slogans, adopting more national ones, making use of the events in the region, which represents a dangerous point as this will attract many elements ... who will be transformed into terrorists."
The minister said part of the problem is that in combating terrorism, the international community is not looking into its causes.
Addressing a controversial local issue, el-Adly said his ministry would not oppose the cancellation of emergency law as long as security and stability are not sacrificed.
Controversial emergency laws have been in place since Islamic militants assassinated Egyptian President Anwar Sadat in 1981.
They give authorities wide powers to arrest, detain for extended periods of time without formal charges and bring civilians before military courts, from which no appeals are accepted without clemency from the president.
Human rights activists and some political parties have been asking for abolition of emergency laws for years.
