FBI warns of attacks on LA
29/04/2004 21:14 - (SA)
Los Angeles - The Los Angeles Police Department was on high alert on Thursday after the FBI warned that terrorists might be planning attacks against shopping malls in the city, the LAPD said in a statement.
Police said they had deployed extra patrols around suspected targets, especially at malls near the city's federal building.
"Recently, federal officials received an unsubstantiated potential threat, which indicated an attack would take place at a shopping mall in the general vicinity of the Federal Building in the West Los Angeles area," the statement said.
"The information indicated the attack would occur on April 29, 2004. The information is uncorroborated and the credibility of the source is unknown."
John Miller, the Los Angeles Police Department's counter-terrorism chief, told the Los Angeles Times that though the information was uncorroborated, "because it mentioned a specific kind of target on a specific day, we felt compelled to share it with the public".
Mayor James Hahn urged people to follow their normal routines.
"We are asking all Los Angeles residents to go on with their daily lives while remaining vigilant and alert," Hahn spokeswoman Shannon Murphy said. - Sapa-dpa
