US urged to stop Israel

Gaza City - Palestinian prime minister Ahmed Qorei urged US National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice in talks on Monday to pressure Israel to halt plans to destroy hundreds of homes in the Gaza Strip, a senior cabinet minister said.
Qorei appealed to Rice during talks in Berlin for Washington to use its influence with its chief Middle Eastern ally to prevent the razing of the houses in the southern town of Rafah, negotiations minister Saeb Erakat, who also attended the talks, said.
"At the beginning of the meeting they discussed the escalation in Rafah and Abu Alaa (Qorei) asked Dr Rice and the US to intervene to stop this operation to destroy the houses" he said.
The Israeli supreme court gave the green light for the destruction of the houses on Sunday after residents obtained a temporary injunction.
Locals were piling their possessions into the back of cars and onto donkeys on Monday as they braced themselves for the start of the operation.
