Al-Khobar, Saudi Arabia - Security forces killed two hostages-takers and captured the other two during a rescue operation Sunday, an employee at the housing compound where suspected al-Qaeda militants holed up in this Saudi oil city told AFP.
"Two were killed and two captured," said the man who asked not to be identified.
Al-Arabiya television reported the leader of the militants had been captured, although there was no official confirmation.
A security guard at the scene also told AFP several hostages had died, but he did not know if they had been killed by the militants or during the operation.
Hostages killed
Meanwhile, a security guard at the scene said several hostages were killed.
"Some were killed," he told reporters waiting to enter the six-storey building which security forces stormed early in the morning.
The guard did not know if the hostages had been killed by the militants or during the rescue operation.
The report came as the hostage drama, which began on Saturday, was reported to be over. Earlier reports said at least 10 people died.
An AFP correspondent saw a bus and several cars drive into the compound as tension faded away.
