Arlon, Belgium - A jury on Thursday convicted Belgium's "most hated man," Marc Dutroux, in a series of child rapes and murders in a case that has horrified the country for nearly a decade and sparked reforms of the judiciary and police.
The 12-member jury convicted Dutroux, a 47-year-old ex-convict, of kidnapping and holding six girls hostage, leading to torture and deaths, in 1995 and 96.
It also found him guilty of murdering two of the girls and an accomplice.
The jury was being polled on 243 counts in all against Dutroux and his three co-defendants, including his ex-wife and two other alleged accomplices.
