Trashy swim to freedom fails
10/08/2004 10:40 - (SA)
Singapore - Five undocumented immigrants believed to be from Myanmar (Burma) were caught trying to swim into Singapore using inflated trash bags, police said on Tuesday.
The latest attempt boosted the total number of people arrested this year for attempting to enter the city-state by sea to 111, said Police Coast Guard Commander Jerry See.
Officers spotted three of the men on Sunday using night surveillance equipment and picked them up. The two others were detected on Monday.
The ages of the five range from 18 to 40.
"Illegal immigrants should not even think of trying to swim into Singapore," See told The Straits Times. "It's not worth the risk." - DPA
