'Chechen warlord responsible'

Moscow - The mass hostage-taking at a school in southern Russia was masterminded by Shamil Basayev, a notorious Chechen warlord, and executed by a top lieutenant, ITAR-TASS news agency said on Saturday.
The report quoted unnamed secret service representatives as saying that the seizure was carried out by one of Basayev's field commanders, Magomet Yevloyev, who operated under the call-sign "Magas".
It described Yevloyev as a subordinate to Basayev and said he was responsible for planning, executing and financing previous attacks in the southern republics of Chechnya and Ingushetia.
In July, Basayev claimed responsibility in a video posted on a website for leading rebel raids the previous month in Ingushetia that left 88 people dead.
