Kids die on way to Paralympics
27/09/2004 10:14  - (SA)

Athens - At least six Greek schoolchildren were killed when the bus carrying them to Athens to watch the Paralympic Games crashed into a truck near the central town of Kamena Vourla.

Firemen recovered six bodies from the debris of the bus and were working to get a seventh out.

"They are obviously dead," the deputy head of Greece's fire service, Andreas Kois, told television station Mega.

The bus was carrying nearly 40 15-year-old children and four teachers from the city of Trikala, in central Greece.

According to media reports, 30 children were injured and admitted to a nearby hospital. No information on their well-being was released.

Schoolchildren daily fill the main Athens Olympic stadium to watch the Paralympics with tickets provided free of charge by the Greek government.
