Madrid - The Spanish government on Friday approved a bill to legalise gay marriages.
This makes it only the third country in Europe to condone same sex marriages, cabinet spokesperson Maria Teresa Fernandez de la Vega said.
The reform notably also grants homosexual couples the right to adopt children.
The other two countries where gay marriage is legal are Belgium and the Netherlands, though only the Netherlands allows such unions to adopt children.
Calling it an important day, she said "the vote put Spain in the forefront of Europe and the world in the fight to end discrimination against same sex unions".
