Jerusalem - Israel has presented its apologies to Egypt after three of its policemen were killed overnight on the border with the Gaza Strip, a source within Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's office said on Thursday.

"We have presented our apologies for this tragic incident to Egyptian officials and we will inform them of the results of the inquiry that we have launched," the official said on condition of anonymity.

The three policemen were killed by a tank shell along the border in the Rafah region of Gaza after being apparently mistaken for Palestinian militants, military sources said.
