  • Reims - A salesman that a self-confessed French serial killer claimed to have shot dead in the late 1980s has been found alive as he was only injured in the assault, a prosecutor in northeast France told AFP on Thursday.

The man, one of nine people that Michel Fourniret has confessed to killing in France and Belgium, had been the victim of a shooting at a highway parking area south of Paris in 1987.

The salesman, who is now retired, tried to press charges at the time, but the case was closed for lack of evidence.

"In actual fact, the man that Fourniret had left for dead was really only injured," said Yves Charpenel, prosecutor general in the city of Reims.

Fourniret, who has admitted to killing nine people in France and Belgium in the late 1980s - seven of them young girls - took part last month in the reconstruction of the alleged abduction of one of his victims.

Fourniret, 62, was arrested in Belgium in June last year over the abduction of minors and sexual misconduct.

It is expected that he will eventually face trial in France, where most of the killings took place.
