22/02/2005 07:12 - (SA)
Tehran - Several villages were destroyed by an earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale which hit the Zarand region of southern Iran's Kerman province early on Tuesday, Iranian television reported.
"We don't have any detail of victims," the provincial governor was quoted on television as saying.
Interior Ministry spokesperson Jahanbaksh Hanjani said the damage so far reported in the towns of Zarad and Kerman was limited to the toppling of walls of old buildings.
The United States Geological Survey said the earthquake measured 6.4 on the Richter scale and was located 60km north northwest of the city of Kerman.
France's Strasbourg Observatory of Earth Sciences said that the quake struck at 02:25 with a magnitude of 5.7 on the open-ended Richter scale.
The region hit by Tuesday's quake is about 200km northwest of Bam where 30 000 people were killed in December 2003 when a quake measuring 6.7 struck.
