  • Hanoi - A 21-year-old man has tested positive for bird flu in northern Vietnam, becoming the first human case identified in the country in more than three weeks, a doctor said on Friday.

"Results have shown on Thursday that the man was contaminated by bird flu," Pham Van Diu, director of Thai Binh hospital, told AFP.

"He currently has severe respiratory difficulties," he said.

The man was being treated in Hanoi's Institute of Tropical Diseases.

Thirty-three people have died in Vietnam since late 2003 in several outbreaks of the disease. Another 12 have died in Thailand.

Delegations from more than 20 countries and organisations, including major donors and United Nations agencies, are attending a conference on the deadly virus in Vietnam's southern Ho Chi Minh City.
