Twins share a heart
09/03/2005 19:38 - (SA)
Tegucigalpa - A Honduran assembly plant worker has given birth to conjoined twin girls who share a heart, doctors said on Wednesday.
"We had to interrupt the pregnancy through a caesarean because of the mother's delicate state of health," said Dr Samuel Santos at the chief public hospital in San Pedro Sula in northern Honduras.
He said the twins, born on Tuesday to Eunice Riera, 26, are otherwise healthy and weigh a total of 5kg.
Santos said doctors had been trying to move the mother to a clinic in the United States but ran out of time before completing the necessary paperwork.
Doctors said they plan to send the newly born twins to a US hospital for separation.
