Wife of serial killer charged
11/03/2005 20:58  - (SA)

Brussels - The wife of French serial killer Michel Fourniret was charged Friday with the murders of three girls, prosecutors said, adding that she had gone back on a number of accusations against her husband.

Monique Olivier has confirmed that she lured three young women as au pairs to her home between July 1992 and January 1997 "knowing that Michel Fourniret was going to kill them," prosecutor Arnoud d'Aspremont Lynden told reporters.

"She has therefore been indicted for murder," he said, adding that she has been questioned by an investigating magistrate during the day.

One of the three victims is a babysitter who investigators have been trying to identify since last summer, he added.

"But she (Olivier) has gone back on previous statements concerning the murders of six or seven young girls she had accused Michel Fourniret of murdering, without giving any explanation," he added.

Fourniret, a carpenter who is also being detained in Dinant, was arrested in Belgium in June 2003 over the abduction of minors and sexual misconduct.

Thus far he has been placed under investigation for six murders in France and two others in Belgium, as well as an attempted kidnapping.

All of the victims were female, several of them young girls. The crimes date back to 1987. He has admitted to eight of the murders and an attempted slaying.

Le Soir newspaper reported on Friday that Fourniret will almost certainly stand trail in France before appearing in court in Belgium.

French judicial authorities intend to try Fourniret in the first three months of 2006, the newspaper explained.

But Belgian investigators say they can?t name a trial date until they carry out further detective work.

That means Fourniret is likely to be tried in France first.
