Pope bread, cakes snapped up
20/04/2005 20:21 - (SA)
Marktl am Inn - Entrepreneurial bakers in Pope Benedict XVI's German birthplace fired up their ovens on Wednesday to make signature bread and cakes in his honour.
Marzipan-glazed "Pope Benedict XVI" tortes and "Pope bread" filled with cinnamon and raisins and marked with a cross were flying off the shelves as hungry revellers who had partied through the night sought a bit of sustenance.
"We are so proud that someone from Marktl became pope," baker Guenther Voelker said.
Joseph Ratzinger was born in Marktl am Inn in the predominantly Catholic state of Bavaria on April 16, 1927. The town plans to send a delegation to Rome for his inauguration as pope on Sunday.
