  • Cairo - Al-Qaeda said in a statement published on a website on Tuesday that its leader in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, was injured and called on Muslims to pray for his recovery.

The statement's authenticity could not be verified, but it was posted on a website known for its militant content.

The statement, posted by the group's media co-ordinator, Abu Maysarah al-Iraqi, didn't say how or when Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was injured.

Al-Iraqi is known to be the group's media co-ordinator, but there was no way to confirm if he'd posted the statement himself.

Al-Zarqawi, who has claimed responsibility for scores of attacks against Iraqi civilians and security forces, kidnappings and beheadings of foreigners, is the most wanted terror suspect in Iraq and has a $25m bounty on his head.

"Let the near and far know that the injury of our leader is an honour, and a cause to close in on the enemies of God, and a reason to increase the attacks against them," the statement said.
