Lampedusa - Two people were confirmed dead and 14 others feared to have drowned after a boat carrying illegal immigrants to Italy sank in the Mediterranean Sea, the Ansa news agency reported on Wednesday.

Fishermen said they had found two bodies and had rescued 11 immigrants about 97km off the coast of Libya.

Survivors said a total of 27 people had boarded the boat, which is thought to have capsized on Tuesday.

Italian navy units were active in the area, which is under Libyan control. - Sapa-dpa
