Internet paedophile ring busted
26/05/2005 10:52 - (SA)
Madrid - Spanish police have detained five suspected paedophiles on charges of raping infants.
Police said on Thursday some of the male children were "babies". News reports said one of the detainees was suspected of abusing children aged between one and five years.
The male suspects, aged between 23 and 43-years-old, were arrested in Barcelona, Orense and Murcia. News reports said two of them were computer experts.
One of the suspects had worked as a babysitter, giving the group access to children. The group filmed the abuse of dozens of children and distributed the images through secret channels on the internet.
Police suspected that the parents of some of the children had consented to the abuse.
Clues including a train ticket held by one of the children on the videos made police conclude that the scenes had been filmed entirely in Spain.
Police described the scenes as "horrific" and said they represented a level of "degradation" unseen before.
Madrid children's ombudsman Pedro Nunez Morgades called for a maximum penalty for the "perverts". He expressed concern that Spaniards had passed from consumers to producers of such images. - Sapa-dpa
