  • Neve Dekalim Settlement, Gaza Strip - A group of nine elderly women was dragged away, kicking and screaming, onto a bus by around 50 police and soldiers at Gaza's largest settlement on Wednesday, an AFP correspondent said.

"He (Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon) has destroyed our lives and it's just one big party for you," screeched one of the women.

Another cried out: "You are bringing destruction on Israel."

The eviction of the women, who were all in their 60s, came after troops and soldiers moved into the Neve Dekalim settlement with orders to forcibly remove all residents who had defied a midnight deadline to leave voluntarily.

    400 protesters arrested

About 400 people trying to enter the Gaza Strip to join protests against the eviction of Jewish settlers were arrested overnight, an Israeli police spokeswoman told AFP on Wednesday.

The arrests came as Israeli forces moved in to expel the settlers. Hundreds of right-wing activists have in recent weeeks infiltrated settlements, which have been declared a closed military zone.
