Jerusalem - A Jewish settler on Wednesday shot dead three Palestinians in the northern West Bank, on the day Israeli troops started to forcibly evacuate settlers from the Gaza Strip, said Israeli medical sources.

Reports said the three workers at the Jewish settlement of Shvut Rakhel, north of Ramallah, were killed by a settler who used to ferry them to work.

The sources said another three Palestinians were wounded.

Israel's Channel Two television network described the killings as "cold-blooded murder by a Jewish terrorist in the West Bank".

Israeli radio said the gunman was arrested.

The shootings came on the first day of the forcible evacuation of Jewish settlers from the Gaza Strip, the first time that Israel had ever left occupied Palestinian land.

The latest deaths brought to 4 815 the number of people killed since the start of the intifada in September 2000, most of them Palestinian.
