Gaza: Mortar fired at troops
17/08/2005 18:52 - (SA)
Jerusalem - Palestinian militants on Wednesday fired a mortar shell at an Israeli army post near the Gaza Strip settlement of Morag where troops were taking part in the evacuation of settlers, military sources said.
"Palestinians fired a mortar shell near an IDF (Israel defence forces) post where soldiers were securing the community of Morag," the source told AFP.
There were no reports of injuries, she added.
Shortly afterwards, Palestinian gunmen and Israeli troops traded fire in the area around the radical Jewish settlement of Kfar Darom and the neighbouring Palestinian town of Deir al-Balah, Israeli radio reported.
There was no immediately confirmation from the army.
The mortar shell came just hours after the fatal shooting of three Palestinians by a West Bank settler.
Palestinian leader Mahmud Abbas, who has urged his people to ensure the Gaza pull-out takes place free of violence, called for restraint in the aftermath of the West Bank shooting.
