Gaza: Suicide bomb plot foiled
17/08/2005 21:16 - (SA)
Jerusalem - Israeli forces have arrested four members of an Islamic Jihad cell planning a suicide attack during the operation to pull settlers out of the Gaza Strip, security sources said on Wednesday.
An explosives belt that was to have been used in the attack was discovered hidden in a solar-power water panel in a house in the Palestinian village of Mawassi, which lies within the main Gush Katif southern settlement bloc.
It was destroyed in a controlled explosion, the sources said.
Three of those arrested came from Mawassi with the fourth from the nearby Palestinian town of Khan Yunis.
Islamic Jihad is meant to be observing a truce and Palestinian leader Mahmud Abbas has appealed to all his people to allow the Israeli pullout to take place free of violence in order to bolster the case for independence.
