Manila - A Philippine farmer who found a grenade and kept it at home for five years lost both his children when they played with it and it exploded, police said on Wednesday.

A 10 year-old boy and his five year-old sister were killed in the blast at their home in the southern town of Magsaysay on Mindanao island on Monday, a police report said.

Their father had found the live grenade at his farm five years ago and decided to keep it inside his house, the report said.

But his children discovered its hiding place on Monday and started playing with it, triggering the explosion.

Police said the grenade could have been lost by either soldiers or communist guerrillas operating in the Davao region of Mindanao.
