Miami - Hurricane Katrina was downgraded on Monday to a Category Three storm on the five-level Saffir-Simpson hurricane intensity scale as it battered New Orleans with high winds and heavy rains, according to the Miami-based US national hurricane centre.
The storm's winds, which had risen on Sunday to a sustained level of 280km/h, slowed to 200km/h as it made landfall in southern Louisiana late on Monday morning, according to an NHC statement.
The storm is expected to further weaken as it moves inland, the centre said.
