  • New Orleans - Streets in parts of New Orleans were under up to 1.8m of water on Monday after Hurricane Katrina battered the low-lying city and pumps failed in some areas, the city's mayor told CNN.

The violent storm, with winds topping 200km/h, swept through southern Louisiana and other Gulf Coast states on Monday morning.

New Orleans mayor Ray Nagin told CNN that three water pumps stopped working in one area of the city, allowing floodwaters to rise up to nearly two meters.

Local television also reported the collapse of an apartment building in a New Orleans suburb, though no details were available on possible injuries.

Residents along the coast climbed onto rooftops to escape surging tides and huge waves generated by Katrina, police told local television.

A number of homes were damaged by boats which broke free from their moorings in the heavy winds.

Downed power lines left about 300 000 people without electricity in southern Lousiana as well.
