Katrina weakens further

Miami - Hurricane Katrina weakened to a category two storm on the five-level Saffir-Simpson hurricane intensity scale after passing New Orleans on Monday and pushing inland toward Alabama, according to the Miami-based US national hurricane centre.
Storm winds dropped to a maximum sustained level of 169km/h as it moved 112km northeast of New Orleans, where it left parts of the city under 1.8m of water.
Tornado warnings were issued for the central-south region of the United States as the storm moved further inland through Mississippi and Alabama, according to the hurricane centre.
Earlier on Monday morning the storm hit land in Louisiana with winds up to 240km/h.
