US pass on 'substandard' aid
15/10/2005 20:24 - (SA)
Washington - The United States plans to pass on food aid donated mostly by European countries after Hurricane Katrina, because Washington says it does not match US standards for food imports.
The meal packages would now be offered to other countries, spokesperson Adam Ereli of the US State Department said on Saturday.
Possible takers had to be found fast as the due dates of the foodstuffs would run out in early 2006, he added.
Almost 400 000 meal packages had been donated by foreign countries including Britain, Germany, Spain, France and Russia after tens of thousands of Americans were left homeless following Hurricane Katrina in late August.
Only a small part of the food relief was handed out to evacuees before the Department of Agriculture stopped the distribution, citing import US regulations aimed at preventing possible illnesses. - Sapa-dpa
