Paris - Rioters in the southern French city of Toulouse set fire to a bus after sundown on Monday, then pelted police with Molotov cocktails and rocks, a local official said.

The rioters stopped the bus and ordered the driver to get out, then set the vehicle on fire, said Francis Soutric, chief of staff at the regional prefecture in Toulouse.

No passengers were inside.

When riot police arrived on the scene, about 50 youths hurled Molotov cocktails and other objects at them.

Police responded with tear gas, the official said.

The clash was the first reported unrest on Monday evening in France.
