New York - Security was stepped up around hotels in New York on Thursday, in the wake of the deadly hotel bombings in Jordan that killed at least 56 people.
The bombs in the Jordanian capital, Amman, targeted the Radisson SAS, the Grand Hyatt and the Days Inn hotels - all favoured haunts of the town's expatriate community and Western travellers.
The additional security measures in New York included the deployment of specialist "Hercules" counter-terrorist units outside hotels, like the Grand Hyatt, near Manhattan's Grand Central Station.
Police officials said the extra security was a precaution and unrelated to any specific threat against the city.
New York had remained on a heightened state of terror alert from the rest of the United States ever since the September 11 2001 attacks.
Security had regularly been beefed up after terror strikes abroad, including the July bombings of the transport system in London.
