New bird flu case in Romania
26/11/2005 18:14 - (SA)
Bucarest - A turkey has been found with the H5 strain of bird flu at Scarlatesti in eastern Romania, the agriculture ministry said on Saturday, adding that authorities would begin slaughtering poultry in the area on Sunday.
The case was the first in a domestic fowl to be detected outside the Danube delta, but it was not yet known if it was the potentially lethal HN51 strain of the virus which has killed more than 60 people in Asia.
The ministry said the village had been placed in quarantine and residents would be given vaccinations against influenza from Sunday.
