  • Shanghai - Five avalanches triggered by continuous heavy snow have trapped about 200 cars in a resort area in far western China, but there were no reports of injuries, said state media and officials on Thursday.

Bulldozers were working to free the vehicles stranded near the Gouzigou resort in Xinjiang, 3 000km northwest of Shanghai near China's border with Kazakhstan, said the official Xinhua News Agency.

A police official in Huocheng, a nearby town, said there were no reports of injuries.

About 50cm of snow had fallen recently, he said. Pictures in newspapers showed snow piled as high as the driver's seat of a bulldozer.

About 3.5 million head of livestock were threatened with starvation since they were unable to forage in the snow, said Xinhua.

Last week, authorities reported that 224 000 people were stranded in the area and 977nbsp;000 were evacuated after a week of heavy snow and bitter cold.

Efforts to ship food and livestock feed to the area were continuing, said the reports.
