Ramallah - The radical Islamist group, Hamas, won 76 of the 132 seats in the Palestinian general election against 43 for the ruling Fatah party, said a source in the central elections commission on Thursday.

The source was speaking to AFP just before a press conference by the commission at which the final results were being announced.

Fatah had already conceeded defeat to Hamas, with prime minister Ahmed Qorei submitting his resignation to Palestinian Authority president Mahmud Abbas.
