'Hamas must recognise Israel'
29/01/2006 11:58 - (SA)
Jerusalem - Israeli acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert demanded on Sunday that the radical Islamist movement Hamas scrap its charter which calls for the destruction of the Jewish state.
"We demand that Hamas annuls its charter and acknowledges the right of Israel to live within secure and recognised borders as well as all the accords, treaties and commitments made by the Palestinian Authority," Olmert said at the start of the weekly cabinet meeting.
"We will not compromise over these demands and the international leaders whom I have been in touch with agree with us," he added.
The radical Islamist movement Hamas, which won a landslide general election last week, has long been committed to the destruction of the Jewish state and has been behind dozens of suicide attacks during a five-year uprising.
