French expecting more riots
30/01/2006 19:12 - (SA)
Paris - Most French believe that a new wave of rioting could sweep through the country and worry that not enough has been done to prevent violent outbreaks in troubled neighbourhoods, according to a poll released on Monday.
Several months after France's three-week wave of rioting and arson attacks, 86% of those polled for Le Parisien newspaper and iTele TV station said they believed fresh unrest could erupt.
About 82% said they placed little faith in measures meant to remedy the high unemployment and racial discrimination that were cited as reasons for the rioting, the poll by the CSA agency found.
The survey polled 1 001 people over age 18. No margin of error was provided.
The poll was carried out on January 25 and 26.
The violence that started on October 27 was France's worst civil unrest since student and worker protests in 1968. Riots were concentrated in troubled neighbourhoods, home to many immigrants from North and West Africa and their children.
Youths set fire to about 9 000 vehicles over three weeks. The government declared a state of emergency, allowing the use of curfews and other measures to stop the mayhem.
