Manila - Seventy-nine people were killed and as many as 201 others injured Saturday when a huge television game show audience stampeded for stadium seats in the Philippines, top officials said.
Vice-President Noli de Castro, who arrived at the scene to oversee the situation, said there were 79 dead, while Health Secretary Francisco Duque said the total number of injuries reached as many as 201.
Thousands of people stampeded into the Ultra stadium in Manila at dawn to secure limited seats hours ahead of the live broadcast of a popular television variety show called "Wow-wow-wee" on broadcast giant ABS-CBN.
