Tehran - The leaders of the United States are all "terrorists" and represent the "real axis of evil", according to Iran's defence minister, Mostafa Mohammad Najjar.

Najjar was responding to US defence secretary Donald Rumsfeld, who re-iterated Washington's view of Iran as the "world's leading state sponsor of terrorism" at a high-level security conference in Munich, Germany, on Saturday.

Najjar described Rumsfeld as "insolent", saying: "The American leaders are terrorists and represent the real axis of evil.

"Rather than accuse everyone else, Rumsfeld would be better off fixing the dishonour of Americans in Afghanistan and Iraq, because world public opinion will not forget the torture of prisoners in Abu Ghraib."

Iran is facing mounting international pressure over its disputed nuclear programme.

On Saturday, the International Atomic Energy Agency decided to report the republic to the United Nations security council.
