Denmark blames Syria for attack
05/02/2006 10:51 - (SA)
Copenhagen - Denmark on Sunday firmly laid the blame on Syria for the torching by protesters of its embassy in Damascus as tensions over Prophet Muhammad caricatures continued to escalate.
"Syria failed in its duty. It is completely unacceptable that the embassy was not protected by the Syrians," Foreign Minister Per Stig Moeller said in a statement.
On Saturday, angry crowds stormed the building housing the Danish embassy in Damascus, setting it on fire in protest over the publication of cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad.
No staff were in the embassy premises, which is on the third floor of a building also housing the Swedish embassy on the second floor and the Chilean mission on the first.
Some demonstrators then went on to the nearby Norwegian embassy building, where they set fire to the second floor after sacking the offices and throwing furniture out of the window.
Stig Moeller said his government had also asked the European Union to condemn events in Damascus.
Shortly after the attack, the Danish government told its nationals to leave Syria immediately.
