Nuke test tunnel for Iran?
08/02/2006 21:45 - (SA)
Washington - Iran has completed drawings of an underground shaft that could be used for testing a nuclear weapon, the Washington Post reported on Wednesday.
Citing officials who have examined classified documents held by US intelligence for 20 months, the drawings include censors for measuring heat in the envisioned 400m tunnel, the Post reported.
The newspaper said the officials cannot be certain about how the evidence fits into Iran's nuclear activities, and the word "nuclear" does not appear on them.
US intelligence believes the documents are authentic, but cannot prove it, and have not ruled out they could have been forged by opponents of the Iranian regime, the Post reported.
The United States believes Iran is using a civilian energy programme to secretly develop nuclear weapons, charges Iran denies.
The UN nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), voted on Saturday to refer the international dispute over Iran's nuclear programme to the UN security council, citing Iran's failure to fully disclose its nuclear activities. - Sapa-dpa
