Cairo - The Palestinian Islamic movement Hamas has to choose between terror and politics, US secretary of state Condoleezza Rice warned on Tuesday after talks with Egyptian officials.

"You canot have one foot in the camp of terror and another foot in the camp of politics," she said during a joint news conference with Egyptian foreign minister Ahmed Abul Gheit.

Rice was speaking during a visit to Egypt, on the first leg of a five-day tour of US regional allies aimed at mustering support for Washington's policies in the Middle East.

Hamas defeated the mainstream Fatah movement of Palestinian leader Mahmud Abbas in last month's parliamentary elections and is expected to form the next Palestinian government.

Hamas, which has carried out the vast majority of suicide bombings against Israel in the last five years, refuses to recognise Israel's existence.
