Philadelphia - What began with two teenagers harassing a man rummaging through a trash bin escalated when the man bared his buttocks at the teens and ended with the teens killing him, police said.
"He didn't want to be harassed by these kids or whatever and he mooned them," police spokesperson David Madonna said on Tuesday.
Christopher McEneaney, 16, and Andre Mark, 18, were charged on Monday in the Friday night slaying of Martin Malone, 47.
McEneaney - who was charged as an adult - brought the multi-tool used to stab Malone and the shovel used to bludgeon him, police said.
Mark also struck Malone several times, Madonna said, but it was unclear whether he used a weapon.
It all began when the teens were walking through an apartment complex outside Philadelphia, on the way to their homes, Madonna said.
They saw Malone sorting through the trash and began to call him names such as "bum", Madonna said.
Malone responded by exposing his buttocks.
The verbal altercation continued and the teens threw rocks at Malone, police said.
The two finally attacked him with the shovel and multi-tool, stabbing him seven times, mostly in the buttocks, authorities said.
The teens left Malone to die on a grassy field, police said.
Police arrested McEneaney and Mark after witnesses gave police descriptions of the clothing the attackers were wearing.
