Rumsfeld 'doing a fine job' Rumsfeld: US needs to be in Iraq

Washington - United States President George W Bush said Donald Rumsfeld had his "full support" on Friday, after a number of retired US army generals criticised the defence secretary's handling of the Iraqi war.

Bush said: "Secretary Rumsfeld's energetic and steady leadership is exactly what is needed at this critical period.

"He has my full support and deepest appreciation."

Several retired generals, some of whom led troops in the Iraq war, have accused Rumsfeld of arrogance and ignoring his field commanders.

The generals called for his resignation.

However, Bush said: "Earlier today I spoke with Don Rumsfeld about ongoing military operations in the US global war on terror.

"I reiterated my strong support for his leadership during this historic and challenging time for our nation."

Bush's own job approval ratings have slid to the lowest yet of his presidency, mainly because of increasing public discontent with the Iraq war.
