Warsaw - A teenager suspected of murdering a 17-year-old Belgian for his MP3 digital music player in Brussels two weeks ago was arrested in north eastern Poland on Thursday, following a massive operation involving the Belgian and Polish police forces.
Polish police spokesperson Mariusz Sokolowski said the teenager was arrested in the town of Suwalki by a special police team.
About 80 000 demonstrators took to the Belgian capital streets last weekend to protest against urban violence.
On Monday, Belgian police arrested the first suspect in the killing - a 16-year-old Polish-born youth, who was residing in Belgium illegally.
Police believe the second suspect stabbed Van Holsbeeck five times in the attack at Brussels' main train station.
The two attackers were identified from security camera footage.
Speaking at a press conference in Warsaw, Belgium's ambassador to Poland, Bruno Neve de Mevergnies, said: "After we knew in Belgium that the two people who did the crime were of Polish origin, contact was made with the Polish police.
'He was totally surprised'
"A special team was set up between the Belgian and Polish police to deal with this case. After trading information between the two police forces, they located the suspect in the town of Suwalki and he was arrested there."
Poland's national police chief Marek Bienkowski said about 200 officers from both countries were involved in the operation.
Bienkowski said: "He was totally surprised.
"I have to say he was very clever. He often changed his place of residence and had accomplices. The suspect used modern methods to evade capture, and was convinced he would escape. But, as it turns out, there's no evading justice."
A member of the suspect's family was also arrested, for aiding and abetting a fugitive.
Bienkowski said the teenager will undergo a "standard medical check and will then be sent to the prosecutor's office, which will present the case in a Polish court, based on the European warrant issued.
"Then the Polish court will decide whether to send him back to Belgium."
