Berlusconi threatens Prodi
30/04/2006 14:43 - (SA)
Rome - Outgoing Italian premier Silvio Berlusconi has indirectly threatened his designated successor Romano Prodi with pressure on the streets, a newspaper reported on Sunday.
If the new coalition majority elects a leftist president, such "dictatorship of the majority ... would produce total opposition not only in parliament," Berlusconi predicted in the Sunday edition of the Corriere della Sera daily.
The incoming parliament is expected to elect a new state president in mid-May as current President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi steps down.
Berlusconi announced on Saturday that he would submit his resignation to Ciampi on Tuesday. His announcement came shortly after election winner Prodi's candidates were elected as speakers in the two chambers of parliament.
After the election of the two parliamentary speakers "the highest state office must be occupied by a representative of the other side," the departing premier said.
