Lucknow - At least 19 people were killed and 26 injured when their bus plunged over a bridge into a dry river bed in India's northern Uttar Pradesh state early on Wednesday, police said.
"Nineteen persons have died in a bus accident near Rampur," said police spokesperson Surendra Srivastava in the state capital Lucknow.
Srivastava said that 26 people had been hospitalised with injuries, three of them in critical condition.
The accident occurred after the driver lost control of the vehicle and it broke through the bridge's railings 330km from Lucknow, police said.
The interstate bus was carrying 45 passengers en route to Haldwani in neighbouring Uttaranchal state.
Bus crashes are frequent in India where highway conditions are poor, driving rash and the vehicles often overcrowded.
Last month, 64 people died when a bus toppled into a lake in India's northeastern state of Assam.
