Bush names new CIA chief
08/05/2006 19:24 - (SA)
Washington - President George W Bush named Air Force general Michael Hayden to lead the embattled CIA on Monday, re-igniting a debate over the domestic surveillance programme he once ran.
Republican and Democratic critics also questioned the wisdom of putting a military officer in charge of the civilian spy agency.
Bush said: "Mike Hayden is extremely qualified for this position."
If confirmed, Hayden would replace Porter Goss, who resigned under pressure on Friday.
