Lesbians edging towards divorce
18/05/2006 14:21 - (SA)
London - Two months ago, Liz King and Daphne Ligthart were among the first gay couples in Britain to legally tie the knot. Now they could be the first lesbian divorcees.
Citing irreconcilable differences, Ligthart, 36, said that she and her sports-loving partner, 40, were splitting up, with the prospect of dividing their joint assets.
They had registered their partnership in Ashford, Kent, in southeast England on February 11 under the Civil Partnership Act that enabled gay and lesbian couples to enjoy the same legal rights as married straights.
Ligthart said: "Liz told me she didn't love me anymore, that she hadn't done so for years. I was absolutely flabbergasted."
First weeks of marriage 'joyful'
She said: "I asked her why she had gone through the wedding and she said it was to make me happy. But, it was all her idea."
The first weeks of their partnership seemed joyful enough, with the couple enjoying a romantic honeymoon in Amsterdam.
Ligthart said: "She even asked if I would change my name by deed poll because she liked the sound of it. We seemed more in love than ever."
However, within a month, Ligthart got a sense that things were changing.
She said: "Liz is into athletics and is a triathlete. She began spending a lot of time training with another girl at her athletics club.
"They were together every day and this girl began coming round the house when I was at work."
King said: "I have nothing to say except I feel sorry for Daphne at this time."
