Bush backs gay marriage ban

Washington - United States President George W Bush supports a controversial proposal - approved by a US senate committee - that would amend the US constitution to ban gay marriage, said his chief spokesperson on Friday.
"He supports it," Bush's spokesperson Tony Snow told reporters. "The president does support the amendment."
The senate judiciary committee approved the measure on a party-line vote on Thursday.
The proposed amendment will go to the full senate on June 5 for what is expected to be a heated debate.
Political insiders believe the amendment will fail.
