27/05/2006 18:56 - (SA)
London - A passenger was stabbed to death on a British express train on Saturday, becoming the latest victim of a series of recent knife crimes in the country.
In the last few days two schoolboys have been stabbed - one fatally.
British transport police (BTP) said the passenger was travelling on the 10:05 train from Glasgow, Scotland, to Paignton in Devon.
"Officers went to Oxenholme railway station, near Kendall in Cumbria but there are no other details," said a BTP spokesperson.
Concern over knife attacks is growing in the country.
A knife amnesty began earlier this week, in a bid to rid the streets of thousands of weapons.
A 14-year-old schoolboy in Birmingham was stabbed in the abdomen on Friday.
Last week a promising footballer, 15-year-old Kiyan Prince, was knifed to death trying to stop a fight outside his school gates in London.
Part-time police officer, Nisha Patel-Nasri, was knifed to death outside her London home earlier this month.
Statistics show that 6% of all violent crimes in Britain are knife-related.
Out of 820 homicides in the country in 2004/5, 236 involved sharp instruments.
In London alone, there were 12 589 knife-related incidents last year.
